“Grease is the word, the word that you heard. It’s got groove, it’s got meaning …” If you can sing along to these song lyrics, you’ll be happy to know that Grease is still very much alive and kicking. It’s the 45th anniversary of this classic that is still beloved and being performed at Maine Camps, along with dozens of other amazing shows.

Theatrical productions at Maine Camps are a big deal. Each summer, directors choose multiple shows like: Annie, Little Shop of Horrors, Shrek the Musical, and more. It gives campers who love to act, sing, and dance their time in the spotlight AND it gives campers who may never have performed before a chance to get their feet wet and try it out. Many who would never have “done the play” back home at school or by driving to an acting class find that they really love being part of the show. Some strive to be stars and others enjoy being part of the ensemble cast and chorus.

In addition to the actors, there are so many other parts that help bring campers into the show fold. Musical campers love getting to play the piano or other instruments that are integral to the show. Other campers love “crew” where they get to help build the sets, and work the lights and curtains. Other fun roles for non-acting participants are costuming and stage makeup.

Some camps do one all-camp show each session. Other Maine Camps produce multiple shows organized by age group. Either way – the theatrical element really brings a creative and rich component to the camp experience that has campers singing along for years to come. In fact, our Campcierge® Laurie shares that her knowledge of many great songs she knows from shows like Bye, Bye Birdie and Damn Yankees come from her camper days.

So dust off those Pink Lady poodle skirts and T-Bird leather jackets, and get ready to “rama lama lama ka dinga da ding-dong” and more. Theater productions will be lit this summer!
