Pickleball at Maine Camps

Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports nationwide and also becoming one of campers’ favorite activities at Maine Camps. While some children are learning to play at home in their school gym class or in town or club programs, many others’ first time playing is at Maine Camps.

Where better to play pickleball than in the beautiful Maine outdoors. Surrounded by beautiful pine trees, many of our camps have installed dedicated pickleball courts for top-notch play. Directors have also had pickleball lines painted on tennis courts for increased opportunities and dual play.

Pickleball is great for campers! It’s active, social, and fun. Pickleball is good for all ages, skill levels, and all levels of fitness. With a net lower than in tennis and a simple underhand serve, there’s a short learning curve and easy access to entry. Pickleball helps with hand/eye coordination, speed, flexibility, confidence, and overall athleticism. It can be played in partners or solo. And, not a lot of equipment is needed to play. Campers just need to bring their sneakers, and camps provide the racquets and small wiffle ball-type balls.

Our Campcierge® Laurie remembers that Neil Feeley of Beaverbrook Tennis & Track mentioned pickleball to her about a decade ago. He talked about the growth it was already seeing and what was to come. At that time, Laurie had heard of it, but never saw it played. (It was created in 1965, but took a little time to gain popularity – especially on the East Coast.) Fast forward, to this past summer and the popularity of was evident; Laurie saw campers at several Maine campers actively playing and having fun. Beaverbrook Tennis & Track and Vermont Recreational Surfacing & Fencing, two great Maine Camp Experience business partners, have been busy installing pickleball courts at Maine Camps.

So grab your paddle and get ready for pickleball at Maine Camps this summer!
