Relishing the Break at Maine Camps

During the holidays, there are festive celebrations, fun gatherings, and great meals. It’s easy to get caught up in the joy of the season, and the period of Christmas through New Year’s Eve is often a time warp. You may lose track of time as days blissfully blend together and even wonder: what day is it?!

If you’re home for the holidays, it’s a great time to relax in your pajamas, make popcorn and watch movies, bake cookies, play charades, cards, and board games, sit by the fire with hot chocolate and S’mores, and spend time chilling with family and friends. And, if you’re away – on a tropical island, on the ski slopes, or in a mountain cabin – you may enjoy sunshine, vacation vibes, fun activities, and awesome adventures. No matter where, if you’re lucky … the family can take a break from usual school and workday routines and demands. This makes us think of camp in Maine.

Each summer, tens of thousands of children leave their rigorous school year schedules behind; they come to Maine Camps where they can rejuvenate and reboot. Without constant attention to watches, cell phones, calendars, classes, and appointments, the days often blissfully blend. And, while there are plenty of activities and special events scheduled by camp directors and staff, campers benefit from a more peaceful pace. Time spent on beautiful Maine Camp lakes and surrounded by the smell of pine in the air allow campers to connect with nature; and, time off of tech devices enable campers to connect with each other. Campers learn new skills (like waterskiing), gain an appreciation for nature (on hikes), and gain confidence, independence, and resilience from having the time to develop these skills. A new environment, a change of scenery, a less hectic routine, different people, and new experiences can be very beneficial to recharging and growing.

Enjoy the flow of this holiday season and relish the idea of Maine Camp summer 2024 ahead for your campers. Happy New Year ahead to all!
