Teamwork at Maine Camps

As the world was captivated by the World Cup, we saw “teamwork makes the dream work” to pass, score, and win. Even in the nail-biting moments of the shoot out in the epic final game, we saw teammates standing shoulder to shoulder with arms around each other supporting each kicker. After each World Cup game, we witnessed incredible camaraderie as players from the same team and from opposing teams supporting each other with congratulatory hugs, displaying good sportsmanship. These important lessons of teamwork, camaraderie, and good sportsmanship are honed over time, and Maine Camps is a great place that kids start to learn.

At home, many kids have their own room, their own schedule, and options of what they want to eat when they want to eat. At camp, while there are many choices of activities and foods, the whole camp is on the same overall schedule and campers come together to make the camp community strong.

There are many times and ways throughout the summer that Maine campers experience teamwork. First is communal living. Campers get to live with peers their own age, which is really fun. Usually in groups of 6-10 campers, with a few counselors for supervision, kids live in cabins or platform tents where they sleep and play. Cards, Mad Libs, storytelling, and just hanging out and talking – campers are learning, sharing, and growing. Together they are also responsible for keeping things organized and clean.

At activities, teamwork reigns supreme. When kids are on the fields and courts playing baseball, soccer, lacrosse, football, volleyball, basketball, and more – they learn strategies and plays to work together as a team to score points and make goals. And, in the theater, campers are part of an ensemble as they entertain with collaborative performances. On the big beautiful lakes, campers learn to sail boats by working together to raise the sails and navigate the winds. And in special events like Color War and Olympics – the winning team makes it over the finish line by working well together to accomplish their goals.

These lessons in teamwork and camaraderie are life skills that kids will use forever. In younger school grades and in college, children and teens will work on group projects to learn. In the workplace, people collaborate on teams to achieve success. And in relationships, people work together to create homes, raise kids, and contribute to communities.

Teamwork is built on good communication, collaboration, critical thinking, innovation, respect, and support enhance outcomes and make us better people. Teamwork “divides the task and multiplies the success” (unknown). We’re excited to team up with our campers and staff to make Maine Camp summer 2023 the best!
