We are into the first week of Maine Camp summer 2023 and we could not be more pumped! Camper arrivals have been exciting as newbies and returnees were met with hugs, high fives, fist bumps, claps, cheers, and human welcome tunnels! Tens of thousands of campers came from every US state and more than 30 countries abroad to enjoy what Maine Camps provide and to make this Maine Camp summer the best ever!
In these first few days, campers have been getting acclimated. They’re settling into their cabins, and they’re connecting with their peers and counselors. Campers are getting the lay of the land as they learn their schedule and about their camp’s traditions and special songs. They are also learning about expectations such as: being kind to all, helping to keep the cabin neat and clean, the importance of getting to activities and meals on time (obviously, the younger campers have more hands-on support to get from place to place), and more. Other first-week traditions may include group photos, writing first letters home, and unifying “Big” and “Little” camp brothers and sisters.
The other exciting part about arriving is diving right into the awesome activities. Knowing that camp time is precious and not infinite, directors and staff quickly get campers engaged in activities – water sports, land sports, arts, nature, and active adventures all make up action-packed camp days. In any one day, a camper could be sailing, waterskiing, playing tennis and lacrosse, climbing a ropes course, baking a blueberry pie, and painting a Maine landscape. And, in the evenings, a camper will have fun activities like Opening Night Campfire, a magic show, Sports Night, and more. Mealtimes are fun and give campers fuel. And downtime, like rest hour after lunch, gives campers some good relaxation and rejuvenation.
Speaking of rejuvenation … now’s a great time for parents to rejuvenate, too. Though the house or town may feel strangely quiet, parents should relish this time. With a little less carpooling, laundry, and food shopping, parents can: book overdue doctor appointments, organize photos, tackle a home project, get work done, travel, meet up with friends, exercise, see a show, read a book, or do whatever provides relaxation, happiness, and a sense of accomplishment.
For both campers and parents, summer 2023 holds a lot of opportunity. After all these months of waiting – we are thrilled to welcome our campers back to their summer home and we can’t wait to see what this summer brings!
