The BEST Summer Job – Work at a Maine Camp
January 16, 2024, by MCE Blog Team

It’s National Mentoring Month, which appropriately coincides with this key camp staff hiring season. The opportunity to sign on to work at a Maine Camp and make a huge difference in kids’ lives is now! Working at a Maine Camp is one of the most incredibly rewarding experiences.

These are reasons counselors love to work at camp in Maine:

  • It’s amazing to be a role model for kids who look up to you for advice, fun, and care
  • You get to hone your leadership and problem solving skills, which is good for yourself and for your resume – it’s great personal and professional growth
  • Working outside in beautiful surroundings in the sunshine sure beats an office job
  • It’s wonderful getting to meet and spend time with counselors and campers from all over
  • Having all meals and accommodations paid for in addition to a salary is a huge plus!
  • No two days are the same. Each day brings new adventures and excitement

Some counselors work specifically as cabin staff. Some work as specialists in activity areas (land or water sports, arts, nature, etc.). Some do both. Oftentimes at camp, we find that staff wear many hats, making each new day fun! There are also positions in the office, the health center, maintenance, and beyond.

Each summer’s camp staff is a great mix of those who return summer after summer (some who even grew up as campers) who wonderfully and importantly continue the longstanding traditions and newcomers who bring a fresh energy and perspective. After fun and useful pre-camp training and working during the camp season, camp staff leave each summer with new skills, new friends, and new confidence!
