Ruby Red Slippers: Theater at Maine Camps

When we saw this Wizard of Oz picture we thought, “There’s no place like Maine Camps,” and we wished we could click our heels together and be there right now. Theater is a very popular activity at camp and thousands of campers participate in camp plays throughout Maine Camps each summer.

There are so many ways campers can get involved from acting, singing, dancing, and playing musical accompaniment, to set design, technical lighting, backstage crew, costuming, stage makeup, and more. Whether first time on stage or seasoned performers, campers really enjoy the experience of performing or doing backstage work, and they also love being a part of the community as they bond through rehearsals.

Shows run the gambit from modern day to classics including: Annie, Mama Mia, Shrek, Little Shop of Horrors, Into the Woods, and many more. While each camp organizes their musicals and plays differently, there are ample opportunities to get involved in camp theater productions. Many Maine Camps put on multiple productions each summer such as one in first half of summer and one in second half. Some camps have all-camp productions, and some organize by age group and division. Plays are often announced in advance of camp starting – some camps will let families know by their newsletter so campers can look forward to the shows.

Show time is exciting! After working hard to put it together, campers get to perform the show (often two or three times). And, the campers in the audience really enjoy the performances and get to know the showtunes, which can really stick with them for life.

Theater at Maine Camps are a great way for campers to express themselves and give them confidence.  Productions are a rich part of the camp fabric, and we can’t wait to raise the curtain on this summer’s shows!
