Bake Cookies Day at Maine Camps
December 17, 2021, by MCE Blog Team

Bake Cookies Day (December 18) is upon us which makes us think about all the delicious cookies baked, served, and eaten at Maine Camps. Some camps serve cookies with milk at night. Other camps make them a daytime treat (in fact – one Maine Camp features “Cookie Line” where campers come from all corners of the camp each day at 11:20am for a mid-morning fresh baked cookie snack). And, some Maine Camps’ cookies are so good that kids from other Maine Camps sign up for intercamps at that camp to get some coveted cookies after the game. Many camps feature cooking studios where campers can make cookies in class. There’s nothing like sharing cookies at camp with friends.

Laurie the Campcierge™ shares that cookies on Visiting Day were always part of her family’s tradition. “Long before boutique cookie businesses were popular (thought they are delicious too), my Mom made her signature cookies that my camp friends and I loved. Each summer on Visiting Day, we looked forward to her ‘Forgotten Cookies’ (meringue cookies with chocolate chips) that she brought in a round, foil-lined tin. These cookies are actually not baked, since you turn the oven OFF once you put the baking sheets with the batter dropfuls in, but when it comes to cookies and camp memories – these hit the spot (thanks Mom!).”

Recipe for Grandma Ellen’s Forgotten Cookies:

Ingredients:

2 egg whites

2/3 cup sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla

Bag of chocolate chips

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Beat egg whites with a mixer until creamy

Gradually add in sugar and continue to beat until stiff

Add in vanilla

Mix in chocolate chips

Spoon mixture in teaspoonfuls onto foil-lined baking sheets

Put in oven

Turn off oven; don’t open until morning (no peeking!)

Enjoy!
