The Miracle of Maine Camps
December 8, 2020, by MCE Blog Team

Although to us it feels like December has just begun, believe it or not, Hanukkah starts in just two days! While many in our Maine Camp community are celebrating the Miracle of Light with family, love, food, and of course, gifts, we, as usual, thought of our favorite gift of all — the Miracle of Maine Camps!

While it may feel silly to compare the Miracle of Light to the Miracle of Maine Camps, we think they have so much in common. Camp, like Hanukkah, is a celebration of community, loved ones, joy, and the light in our lives. Each summer at camp, our campers, counselors, and directors form lifelong bonds that truly give us something to celebrate each year.

When we think of camp, we also think of the power and beauty of technology-free moments. As many of us celebrate the holiday this week, we encourage our Maine Camp family to channel their technology-free summer energy into the time we spend celebrating Hanukkah with our nuclear families at home. Being without technology gives us a chance to truly appreciate each other’s company — something that is extra important during the holiday season.

And, for the friends and extended family we won’t be able to see in person this year, we are thankful for Zoom, FaceTime and the practice that Maine Camps give us of keeping in touch while we’re away from the ones we love.

The holidays also make us think of the simple pleasures we enjoy each summer at camp. Spinning the dreidel with family at the holiday reminds us of playing jacks at camp with friends; games and moments like these are some of the best ways to unwind. And, while the weather might be slightly different right now than it is at camp, times like these are a perfect chance to unwind outside like we do at camp — whether it’s bundling up for a snowy adventure or taking a stroll in a warmer climate.

So relish the quality time with family and friends (in person or virtually), and enjoy the potato latkes, chocolate gelt, and sweet jelly donuts emblematic of the holiday. We wish everyone who is celebrating a Happy Hanukkah filled with light and love!
