Costumes at Maine Camps

Whether you’re a kid or a kid at heart, Halloween is almost here! People young and old (many pets too) will don fun costumes for the holiday, which makes us think about dressing up at camp.

Dressing up at Maine Camps is a great way for campers and staff to have fun and express themselves. Some camps celebrate Halloween in summer and some have themed Socials like Neon Night. Some camps have Woodstock Festival Days with glasses, beads, and tie-dye t-shirts, and some have post-Visiting Day fashion shows with outfits made from candy and trick-or-treating after parents leave. Of course, July 4th is a huge red, white, and blue spectacle.

Some camps have a costumed mascot who makes surprise appearances around camp throughout the summer. And sometimes dress up begins before the camper summer even starts. For example, a leadership team may dress in costumes such as Toy Story and perform a skit for counselors during orientation training to show how much fun camp will be.

There’s dress up for elaborate, well produced camp plays and musicals. Not to mention special outfits for team days in Color War, Olympics, and beyond. Face paint, bandanas, tutus, and capes all play an integral part.

Some costumes at camp are specific things like superheroes, characters, or animals, and others are just a random, wacky expression of zany fun. While some costumes are store-bought and complete, others are a mishmash of curated items. Costumes may include items like garbage bags from the camp kitchen, and toilet paper or bandages from the health center. Knickknacks from nature like sticks and leaves can form a nice woven crown (toga anyone?). Friends share funky sunglasses, mismatched socks, and crazy makeup, too.

Spooky and/or themed decorations, stories, music, and more all help set the tone. Tasty treats like little chocolate donuts with pretzels legs and M&M eyes can help create the mood.

Maine campers are no strangers to dressing up for costume fun. Wishing everyone in the Maine Camp community a fun and safe Happy Halloween!
