Music at Maine Camps

Music is the soundtrack of our lives, and there are so many ways that music permeates the Maine Camp experience.

Opportunities abound for Maine campers to take music lessons during their regularly scheduled days. Whether they already know how to play or want to learn anew, campers can sign up for singing lessons or lessons in guitar, piano, and other instruments. They can learn to create and produce music in well-equipped studios. They can also select songs and emcee on radio stations that play throughout camp.

Campers have many opportunities to perform music. Campers can form bands and put on shows for the camp, they can participate in informal open mic and “coffee house” nights, and they can sing and play music in camp theater productions.

Singing camp songs is part of the fabric of each Maine Camp Experience (MCE) camp. Some camp songs have been passed down and sung for generations. Other songs are created new each summer when during Color War, Sing, and Sing Song campers create lyrics that are a commentary on that summer’s happenings and are set to the tunes of current popular songs.

Songs around the campfire are some of the most special ways to sing camp songs. One MCE camp director said that he loves to hire staff who like music. For example, his ropes course instructor by day also plays great guitar around the campfire at night. Another MCE camp director likes to sing songs and play guitar – he plays current music, original songs, and also loves a good Sinatra tribute.

Campers and staff also like playing music in their cabins. Popular songs become anthems of the summer and favorite songs are forever intertwined with the memories of the idyllic summers spent with camp friends at their summer home away from home.

The songs of summer are music to our Maine Camp ears and we can’t wait to sing some songs this summer!
