Forever Bonds of Friends at Maine Camps

Did you know it was National Best Friend Day yesterday? Although we know that it’s not a formal holiday, National Best Friend Day is something we at Maine Camp Experience (MCE) know all our campers feel in their hearts. When we think of best friends, it’s impossible not to think of the strong, life-long friendships that form and grow deeper every summer at Maine Camps.

Camp friendships are unlike any other friendships we can think of. After spending an entire summer living in a cabin together under one roof, experiencing a wide variety of exciting activities together, and creating long-lasting memories on camping trips, at campfires with S’mores, or even at camp socials, the friendships formed at camp are truly so special.

When MCE blogger Emma reflects on her camp friends, she says, “Each of my seven summers, I was almost astounded by the way my friendships continued to deepen. As we parted ways in August each year, I never worried about my friendships fading throughout the year, because my camp friends truly felt like family to me. No matter how long we went without seeing each other or catching up when the time came to get together again in June, I always knew that we would instantly pick up right where we left off. Now, six years later, even though we can’t come together for seven weeks each summer like we once did, this is still so true of my camp friends. When we gather for unofficial and official reunions or even hop on a Zoom call, we instantly jump right back to our camp selves, and are constantly laughing and reflecting on our many memories together. You grow up with your camp friends in a way that no other friendships can compare to, and the bonds you make truly stick with you for life. My camp friends are my ‘sisters,’ and I know this will hold true for many years!”

The same is true for Emma’s two sisters who also constantly keep up with their camp friends— one is eight years out of camp and one is just two years out, and for MCE blogger Ali who is 10 years out of camp as well. No matter where you go, your camp friendships stick with you and truly are friendships that last forever.

So, whether we’re bonding on a sailboat on a Maine lake at camp or taking a walk “together” via FaceTime from our respective hometowns – we can have a laugh together, have fun, share confidences, and grow up together. Camp friends are some of the best friends we’ll have for life!
