Spotlight on Equestrian at Maine Camps

An amazing part about going to camp in Maine is that kids get to enjoy activities they may not have time or access to at home such as waterskiing, sailing, and horseback riding, and they can enhance their skills on activities they know and love. Equestrian programs at our Maine Camps are a highlight for many kids who choose to spend time riding and taking care of horses.

Maine Camps offer extensive equestrian programs. Qualified instructors provide riding lessons on well-schooled and well-mannered horses and ponies to children at all levels from beginners through advanced riders. The camps feature large riding arenas, and spacious and well-maintained stables; some also feature access to riding trails.

Campers develop confidence around horses in general and really bond with the horse that is best matched for them. Instruction for beginner riders start with becoming comfortable with horses and the basics of leading, mounting, and steering. They progress to trotting, cantering, jumping, dressage, and beyond. Many Maine campers have the opportunity to participate in horse shows. Campers also enjoy horse care including feeding, bathing and grooming, saddling, tacking and un-tacking, equine psychology and much more.

Opportunities range from riding a couple times a week, to an hour every day, to several hours a day.  Some of our Maine Camps even offer shorter session more intensive equestrian-specific camp academy programs where campers spend the majority of their day riding and caring for the horses, with just a few traditional camp activities and lake time sprinkled in. All riders must have helmet, riding boots and riding pants.

So saddle up! It’s almost time to grab the reins and get riding.
